About Dom
I’m Dom Crotty, founder of New Dawn Career Coaching. I am an experienced Business Skills Training & Development Consultant and Careers Coach. I have over the years worked with the managers, staff and teams in well over a hundred client companies supporting their learning & development.
During my working career, I have worked as a management and marketing consultant with KPMG; as a client account partner and trainer with Cegos (Europe’s largest business skills training firm) and, later, in Senior Account Manager and Business Development roles for OPP Ltd (now The Myers-Briggs Company). Later for 8 years as a Senior Partner Client with TalentQ/Hay Group and Korn Ferry plc., the global organisational consulting firm and, most recently, 2-3 years as Asst. HR Director with Carne Group.
I have had some great successes in business. I have worked with some amazing and world-leading firms and businesses in jobs that I found hugely stimulating and rewarding. I have benefitted from having had some fantastic managers and leaders who I could look up to and still admire to this day.
And I have had my share of disappointments and have been through the “school of hard knocks”. I know what it’s like to lose a job due to global economic upheaval and downturns caused by the likes of the Gulf War in the early 90s, the 2007-08 global banking collapse, or the current global pandemic. I know what it is to have to uproot my family and to emigrate and leave home to move to another country to get work.
And in the same way, as I have been blessed to work for some amazing companies and with great managers and team-mates, I also know what it is like to be forced to work in roles that I hated and to have to report to incompetent, biased uncaring and managers didn’t trust me and who treated me and my fellow workers unfairly. Those were the jobs I took in order to stay in work and to provide for my family. At the time, it was the right and responsible thing to do and gave me the base from which to move on. I hated it - but gritted my teeth and resolved to move on.
Some good, some great, and some frankly awful working experiences. But in all cases, good or bad, I never gave up and always resolved to learn from those experiences. I believe it was Eleanor Roosevelt who once said "learn from the mistakes of others. You can't live long enough to make them all yourself."
I learned to emulate those great managers who could motivate me and my workmates. And I learned and resolved never to repeat the life-numbing, demoralising behaviour and approaches I received from some grossly ineffective managers. And, often, I have found that the hardest and longest-lasting learning comes from the more challenging experiences.
So that is what I have to offer: Training and development, coaching and learning based on a lifetime of experience and a lifetime of learning - both formal and informal. Do I have all the answers? Of course not. But I’d like to think that I have accumulated much experience, knowledge and, indeed, some small share of wisdom that equips me to help you in your own development.
My job is to strengthen your clarity about your career choices and direction. I'm passionate about supporting people to reach their potential. I want to help you find the role that suits you, the role that gives you the most joy and happiness.
About me personally
I’ve lived in Greystones, Co. Wicklow - the Garden of Ireland for nearly 30 years. Previously, I lived for 6 years in Cambridgeshire in the UK and, during the course of my career, I have worked with clients in Ireland, the UK, Europe and the USA. Long-time and loving husband to the happiest wife in Greystones and proud and caring Dad to my daughter and son. Sports are a big part of my world. My favourite sports being golf, which I still play in my local club in Greystones, and rugby which, alas, I can only now only watch as a spectator.
In the summer, I like to spend hours in the garden; it’s just a great therapy and a lovely way to relax and forget about my worries. And no better way to end a day in the garden than trying my hand at the barbeque, I’d describe myself as a keen and creative cook using whatever comes to hand such that I can guarantee that no two of my meals will ever be the same.
As for my own Type Preference or “Best-Fit”: Very definitely an ESFJ
According to Type-Coach, “ESFJs leave people feeling good about themselves and appreciated. ESFJs take great pleasure in contributing to others’ happiness by helping in concrete ways. Their strong desire to be well-liked, to be seen as nice, generous, and helpful, makes them highly supportive and generous with their energy and time.” That sounds about right to me!
Values
A passion and commitment to service and to always put the customer first
We’re shaped and moulded based on our earlier experiences. In my own case, I first started working at the age of 13 during the summer months in my family’s bakery business. There, the first thing that I learned from my father was that in business the customer always comes first. This instilled in me a belief and commitment to customer service that stayed with me throughout my working life. No matter how small - or how big the issue, no matter when or where, no matter the time of the day, if a customer asks and requires help and service, then I will always do my very best to deliver and meet those needs. To do anything less would be to betray the values passed down to me from my father, and his father and grandfather before. It’s in my DNA, the very essence of who I am.
Fairness and equality
I believe that whereas none of us are the same, we are, nevertheless, equal and should all be treated equally. Yes, I know that many of us, myself included, benefitted from being born into better circumstances than others. And that’s what it was: an accident of birth. I gained and had a great head-start in life by being born into a loving, caring family where I was given every opportunity, encouragement and resource to learn and develop myself. But I know and have worked side-by-side with others who were less fortunate in the hand that they were dealt at birth. Did that make me any better than them? Of course, it didn’t. And often, I’ve seen and indeed celebrated watching those who started at the back of the line in the race of life play their hand much better progress in their business lives and careers much, much further than I could ever have hoped for. We’re all equal - just not the same.
A sense of fun and humour
Life can be tough and circumstances can from time to time get us down. But no matter how bad it gets, I believe there are always better times ahead and it's important that we look to the bright side. I have a great sense of humour and fun - and yes, a sense of fun and devilment that has got me into trouble on more than one occasion. But one of the very nicest things that anyone ever said about me, was a friend and colleague from France who said of me that no matter what was happening, no matter however grave or serious the challenge or crisis, every time he met with me he always went away happier and with a smile on his face.
